The cost of food in Nigeria today is so high because of the economic challenges, and it’s so difficult to strike a balance to eat healthy. Many people in our society today, complain that to eat healthy is so expensive. A few days ago, I wanted to buy a bucket of beans and it sold for # 4,000, more than double the previous price.
During all of these we can still eat healthy on a budget. Most times the healthiest food is also the cheapest, and to eat healthy on a budget, there are few things you need to consider and do. Plan out the few meals you want to prepare for the week and create your shopping list based on your budget and consider the following – Consider meatless meals; According to nutritionist, Plant-based proteins are highly nutritious and generally more affordable than meats and fish. If you still crave meat, consider plant proteins like tofu, so that you can save cost. Proteins like "tofu" helps nutritional regimen and usability. Be flexible in your shopping list. Foodstuffs like fresh produce or poultry and fish, if they are foods you enjoy, you might purchase extra quantities and freeze them for later use. Buy food, snacks and fruits that fill the stomach when a limited budget. Eating food that are not filling only lead to hunger as quickly as possible. Buying non-perishable foods in bulk, even though it may cost more. Buying in bulk at times is usually cheaper. To determine this, you will need to calculate the price and always make comprising with other products which is cheaper and will pay you. Try other brands when buying food item or ingredients. Other brands could be better, they could probably be cheaper because they spend less money on advertising. Avoid buying highly perishable items than you can use in one week (unless you plan to freeze them), or else you run the risk of food spoilage and waste. Expenses on juice, and drinks take up huge amounts from our purse. To curb these huge expenses always go for the gift of nature which is water. With water you can drink a lot and even still make your own fruit juice with water. Consider vegetables when on a budget. Nigeria has a wide range of delicious and affordable healthy vegetables that with little research can be made into scrumptious nutritious meals. For example, pumpkin leaves which is locally known as Ugwu, is a vegetable used for both culinary and medicinal purposes. It is rich in minerals such as calcium, potassium, magnesium, iron and folic acid, vitamins A, C and, k and lots of minerals. Studies show that it improves blood count, helps manage diabetes and cholesterol levels. Most importantly plan and eat attentively. Practicing mindfulness during meals can increase enjoyment of the food. You may even be satisfied with smaller portions.
